Originating as an undergarment worn by 19th-century Englishmen, it was later adopted by rowers in the Royal Regatta in Henley, Oxfordshire, earning the name “Henley shirt”. Beyond its use in sports, it became a staple for railroad and factory workers in England and America, serving as a practical layer under their uniforms to reduce frequent washing.
